CITY LIGHTS (1931) Directed by Charles Chaplin

We have spent a whole movie watching the little tramp maintaining the fantasy of love and class, dealing with a drunk millionaire, but nothing prepares us for the pivotal ending, when the young blind woman, having recovered the sight thanks to the "impostor" millionaire Charlot, looks at him and finds out he's just a street tramp. Chaplin recreates in this close up, all the anguish, hope and dilution that life brings.
